Vision and Mission
Vision
The Department of Philosophy,
University of Yangon, will be achieved its goals in which student success and
broadening its recognition for excellence in teaching, wide-ranging application
of philosophy discipline, and community service are focal points through
research, teaching, and wider activities or service for local needs.
Primary Academic Achievement
We hope to see ourselves, at
the end of thirteen years, a successful department works together with energetic
and productive faculty who offer the best M.A. and Ph.D. In addition to these
regular courses, Diploma in Applied Ethics and Certificate in Applied Logic
courses of developing human resources program also fulfill our ambition which
is wide-ranging application of our discipline, and community service. At that
time, we expect to foster the research programs of our faculty in national as
well as trans-national level through interdisciplinary approach to make the
collaborative research together with other disciplines or universities in our
country or in abroad. Eventually, this produces high level conference
presentations and highly visible publications. Moreover, the resulting highly academic
capacity and excitement promotes to create the new courses, produces new modes
of interdisciplinary cooperation, and establishes new opportunities for public
discourse.
Further Achievement
In addition, our faculty explore
the extensive scope of philosophical topics. Their current research programs
address Eastern and Western traditional and contemporary problems in Theoretical
Ethics, Applied Ethics, Aesthetics, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Science,
Philosophy of Language, Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Social Science, Philosophy
of Law, Philosophy of Religion, Feminist Philosophy, and more. Thus it shows
that the scope of philosophy itself chiefly concerns with Interdisciplinary
Approach which is crucial important in 21st century Higher Education
Sector. From ancient times, philosophers have addressed the big questions, and
today their inquiries illuminate myriad subject matters and yield practical as
well as theoretical consequences. But, attention to analysis, evaluation,
argumentation, and proof can aid in the negotiation of any subject matter. Since
it is not taught in primary or in secondary school, many students come to University
of Yangon unaware of our discipline. They discover philosophy only by chance
when they try out a one-course requirement that extends an otherwise vocational
courses of study or wide-ranging application it in their professions. Our more
advanced courses support an undergraduate major as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. programs
that is ranked among the top 1 in the nation.
Mission
The Philosophy Department,
University of Yangon, is to explore and advance the applications of our
discipline by leading to innovative research, teaching, and supporting academic
service to society. Our faculty will be expected to publish their research outcome
in highly selective journals of national as well as trans-national level, which
are dealing with diverse perspectives, both traditional philosophical issues
and non-traditional philosophical issues of current applications. They teach
courses that engage and empower students with an instructional or
student-centered approach that serves casual students, undergraduate majors and
minors, masters, and doctoral candidates. And they serve wider constituencies
by participating in a variety of learning societies and in academic
conferences, forums, and seminars, offering analysis and debate that promises
deeper understanding of current critical topics. By extending these
departmental activities to interdisciplinary activities together with other
disciplines, promote our university status as a leading public research
university.
We encourage students to go
forward their study as a life-long learning process by creating a rich
mentoring environment and a challenging, rewarding curriculum. We emphasize the
necessity of all students to learn critical thinking skills, creative skills,
decision-making skills, problem-solving skills, analytic and synthesis skills, self-study
skills, and communicative skills in which writing, reading, listening, and
speaking skills in English language is focused. We take forward situations in
which students have opportunities to apply these invaluable skills with
case-based learning techniques and with continual discussion of latest
worldwide circumstances. The Department strongly supports diversity or
interdisciplinary approach in curriculum and aims to sustain that task through
supplemental or extra-curricular activities, supporting student engagement
across campus, and explicitly recognizing our roles as philosophy student in
our society.
